  • My client has been in business for 12 years and currently has more than 75 facilities in 7 states with approximately 400 employees. 
  • The Company has been very successful in profitably growing its business and continues to grow primarily through acquisition of facilities.
  • The principals of the Company have a long history of growing multi-unit concepts across the country and internationally.

DIRECTOR OF ACCOUNTING JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Reporting directly to the CEO or President, the Director of Accounting has the responsibility for the coordination and execution of all financial related activities in order to assist in the proper financial management of the principal company and its related group of retail stores. 
  • Will manage the daily, weekly and monthly financial activities of the company, including accounting, tax, treasury, financial reporting, budgeting and financial planning. 
  • MUST BE HANDS ON AND HAVE DEMONSTRATED EXPERIENCE IN HIRING, TRAINING AND DEVELOPING ACCOUNTING STAFF.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directing all accounting operations (AP, AR, Stock Ledger, GL, Payroll) including, audit, control, tax, treasury, financial reporting, budgeting and financial planning activities.
  • Maintain the company’s system of accounts and keep the books and records on all company transactions and assets.
  • Produce monthly financial statements including income statement, balance sheet, statement of changes in financial/cash position, cash flow projections, aged receivables and aged payables listing on a timely basis (within 10-days of period ending)
  •  Manage all aspects of banking and other financial relationships.
  • Manage external auditors and annual audit process.
  • Proactive analysis of the monthly financial statements for the business including: analysis of key financial performance indicators and trends, including financial ratio’s; cross store and market comparisons including establishing financial benchmarks of acceptable performance; comparison of actual results to budget with corrective actions required by the Controller.
  • Establish, implement and monitor financial controls, which would include approvals and authorizations and a review of all financial processes and financial systems in conjunction with CEO, the Management Committee and Area Managers.  This would include documenting the Company’s financial processes and systems in a Financial Controls Manual.
  • Establish and oversee the policies and filing of government reports, audit and tax forms.
  •  Assistance with special projects such as in the preparation of the financial aspects of new business opportunities. 
  • Prepare the annual financial statements for the business, including working paper support and corporate tax returns, for the review of any of the Company’s outside accountants. 
  • This role would include proactive management of audit and accounting fees.
  • Provide leadership and development to all of the accounting and administrative staff. 
  • This would include performing general office management duties as required such as: managing the performance of administrative personnel, including accounting, payroll, and scheduling personnel; managing control of supply expense budgets; providing general financial guidance to Area Managers; managing the financial aspects of the corporate benefits plan; managing the financial aspects of Worker’s Compensation Benefits; and corporate insurance.
  • Provide store level direction on commission reconciliation, deposit verification and timeliness, inventory discrepancies; and, lead the twice annual event of taking store inventories, managing discrepancy procedures and developing chargeback program to pay plans and store profit.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • The Director of Accounting is responsible for the condition of the finance department corporate facilities and the management of all associates within assigned areas.
  •  In particular, the Director will have responsibility to hire, train and develop an accounting staff that will effectively and efficiently execute all aspects of the financial and administrative functions of the business


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: BA/BS in Accounting 
  • Experience:  Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Director of Accounting, Senior Accountant or Controller in a multi-unit retail environment (experience in retail a significant plus), including experience in management, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting with specific experience in:
    • GAAP
    • Accounts Payable
    • Accounts Receivable
    • Audits
    • Bank Management
    • Fixed Assets
    • General Ledger
    • Payroll
    • Financial Reporting
    • Commission Reconciliation
  • The ideal candidate should have sufficient experience to manage the financial functions of a Company with 100+ retail stores, including the demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently run an accounting/finance department.
  • Licensure: CPA highly desirable
  • Evidence of successful motivational/people management and people development skills. 
  • Evidence of ability to manage for achievement of corporate goals. 
  • General knowledge/interest in the retail industry. 
  • Must possess negotiating, problem solving, and leadership skills. 
  • Must have solid written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Must be fluent in the use of computer applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, email and retail POS and Financial systems). 
  • Knowledge of Great Plains Accounting System a plus.
